Simon Schmitt IT Researcher

What I do

I joined the working group Computer Systems & Telematics at the Institute of Computer Science, Freie Universität Berlin in November 2013. I am interested in wireless sensor networks, distributed computing, artificial intelligence, and robotics. Besides doing research in these fields I organize lectures and supervise diploma / bachelor / master theses.

I introduced the method of testing and evaluating indoor localization systems and algorithms using autonomous robots carrying a system under test. Furthermore, we developed a virtual indoor localization testbed (VirTIL) to simplify the process of testing such solutions on real-life data and thereby allowing numerical comparisons. I am currently working in the field of wireless sensor networks with a focus on methods solving the indoor localization problem of people in rescue scenarios.
